(TotalConservative.com) – According to reports, a group of Democratic lawmakers are drafting a letter to put pressure on the Biden administration to open the borders for Palestinian asylum seekers. The draft letter, which calls for allowing Palestinian internationals into the US, is circulating among a few Democratic lawmakers: Reps. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Pramila Jayapal of Washington, and Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois.
According to the Daily Caller, who obtained a copy of the letter, the lawmakers are calling on President Joe Biden and his administration to “designate the Palestinian territories” for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), as well as authorizing Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to any Palestinian nationals currently in the US. These two programs offer nationals a temporary legal status if they’re from countries experiencing an armed conflict situation, a natural disaster, or “other extraordinary conditions” preventing the individual from safely returning to their home country.
TPS protects nationals arriving or inside the US from deportation and also grants them work permits. Eligible countries are determined by the Homeland Security Secretary, while DED eligibility is approved by the president. If the Democratic lawmakers’ request is approved by President Joe Biden and his administration, millions of Palestinians could enter the US without risk of deportation. The letter also highlights that how many Palestinians already in the country who would benefit from DED or TPS isn’t known.
The draft letter urges the Biden administration to “designate the Palestinian territories” for TPS and/or DED for Palestinians already in the US. Open opponents of these measures, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, argue that allowing Palestinian refugees in during the ongoing conflict poses a risk to Americans of possible terrorist attacks inspired by the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas.
The conflict between Israel and the militant Palestinian group in control of their territories has resulted in thousands of deaths and is currently pushing global politics to the brink, especially in the US where both major parties are internally divided on how to respond to the situation.
One side is calling for a cease-fire despite the fact that Hamas reportedly killed 1,400 people during their coordinated attack on Israel, while the other side argues that Israel is employing excessive retaliation in a military campaign that has killed an estimated 10,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank in order to stop Hamas.
