(TotalConservative.com) – House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) blasted Biden’s State of the Union speech, suggesting that Biden’s overtly political messaging and antagonism towards Republicans may have ended the annual tradition of presidents being invited to Congress.
Emmer suggested that he fully anticipates Trump to blow Biden out of the water in the November general election, but suggested that Biden would not be invited back next year if he somehow managed to win. The trend of not-inviting presidents from the opposition party to give the State of the Union address could become a regular fixture of American politics. The State of the Union address wasn’t regularly given until the early 20th century.
Emmer added that Biden’s speech was far more political and divisive than is traditionally accepted.
Biden attacked Trump over a dozen times in the speech and refused to name him, referring to him exclusively as “my predecessor.” Biden also laid out his agenda going forward, including more taxes, more spending, flooding the border will criminal invaders which he blamed on Republicans, and the bombshell announcement that he’s sending troops to build a port in Gaza to distribute relief supplies.
Biden also opened his speech by comparing Trump to an infamous 20th century German dictator and attacking the Supreme Court for overturning Roe v. Wade. Almost all the high court was in attendance during the speech.
Emmer highlighted that the House invites the president to give the annual address. He suggested that the speech was more appropriate for a campaign stop than the halls of Congress. He also explained that for over a hundred years between the nation’s founding and the early 20th century, there was no State of the Union address.
The President’s annual message was typically written and distributed in newspapers during the period. Emmer suggested that the speech is supposed to unify and advertise the achievements of the nation while setting the agenda for the next year. He pointed out that Biden failed to do that and also weaponized the speech to attack conservatives, breaking with tradition.
