Speaker Johnson Blasts Calls To Oust Him

(TotalConservative.com) – Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is upset that hardline conservatives are planning to bring a motion to kick him out of the office to the floor for a vote. The three Representatives pushing the issue and one-seat majority in the House necessitate aid from Democrats, should Johnson survive the vote to oust him. Democrats have already signaled that they will protect Johnson from being fired.

Johnson argued that he’s slowly advancing conservative positions and complained that the Democrat majority in the Senate as well as control of the White House makes any conservative agenda virtually impossible to achieve. His largest critics are Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

Massie relayed a story on May 6 regarding a speech given by Justice Antonin Scalia to a small group of congressmen at the Capitol Hill Club regarding “restoring the constitutional balance of government.” Obama was president and Republicans were upset about his behavior, but unwilling to actually oppose him with political action. Scalia reminded the men that Congress controls funding, and anything that isn’t funded can’t happen.

Massie suggested the Speaker had misled the Republican caucus and refused to use the power of the purse when it was clearly an option on the table. He highlighted how Johnson gave Democrats everything they wanted when it came to an additional $61 billion for Ukraine and reauthorizing warrantless wiretaps under FISA.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries seems to believe that if Ukraine falls, US troops will be sent to fight Russians in Europe. It’s not clear why that assertion is being made. Jeffries suggested that hardline Republicans who oppose endless funding for Ukraine are “pro-Putin.”

Johnson claims to be a “Reagan conservative” while fiscal conservatives have compared him to Nancy Pelosi and Hakeem Jeffries. The recent statement of support from Jeffries and the Democrats was cited as a “uniparty reveal” moment by Massie, highlighting that the Democrats seem to control the ostensibly Republican speaker.

Johnson defended his willingness to give the Democrats his support, suggesting that the war in Ukraine was a U.S. national security priority. He also expressed his willingness to wait until after the November elections to put forth real border security, adding that there wasn’t a chance with the current President and Senate.
