(TotalConservative.com) – The U.S. military is backed by an ample industrial complex that employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars per year in revenue. It’s a major chunk of the American economy, and business has been booming in large part due to the war in Ukraine. The additional prospect of war with China is also arousing interest in the defense industry.
Politicians who push for war get donations from the corporations that profit, allowing taxpayers to fund the effort and representatives in Congress. Both parties are majority pro-war, with very few voices standing out as advocates for peace.
Major General Smedley Butler famously opined that “war is a racket.” Butler lived through the turn of the 19th century, but his words are no less true today. In fact, Richard Cook recently outlined just how much of a racket war has become today. In his piece “Is World War III About To Start?” he pointed out that 2.1 million people work in the defense industry. They generated $741 billion in revenue for 2022. That’s excluding the nearly 2.2 million people who work for the armed forces or are in the reserves.
The American military establishment is unlike anything that’s ever existed, and it’s unlikely to simply stop generating weapons and carnage anytime soon. They also support the administration of President Joe Biden, who’s promised to continue the war in Ukraine “as long as it takes.”
The problem with that is that the Ukrainians are dying too fast. Stories from the country indicate authorities have been conscripting all the adult males, in some cases grabbing them off the street or when they attempt to escape across the border. The Ukrainian counter-offensive has been an unmitigated disaster.
Journalist Seymour Hersh was told by an anonymous senior intelligence official that Ukraine had roughly 75,000 deaths as a result of their much-lauded counter-offensive. With no willingness to stop the fighting on either side, the U.S. only has one option to continue to expand the bloodshed: draft Americans and send them into the grinder.
Some are already suggesting a draft is required, and even as the popularity of the Ukrainian war is dwindling, there’s still the threat of China to consider.
