RNC Chair Debates CNN Host on Abortion Issues

(TotalConservative.com) – Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel exchanged perspectives on the party’s abortion politics and messaging on Sunday, November 12th.

McDaniel appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss her party’s lackluster performance since she’s been in the position. She was recently and publicly critiqued by GOP primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who called the party “a party of losers” after losing multiple national elections in recent years during the third Republican primary debate.

McDaniel emphasized that babies feel pain, including 15-week-old developing fetuses who are aborted. She then asked, given that information, why are Democrats continuing to defend 38 or 39-week limits for abortion or no limits at all?

Host Dana Bash said that “most Democrats” aren’t that extreme adding that abortions that late generally indicate a medical problem threatening the life of the mother. McDaniel said the life of the mother is always protected by exceptions to abortion laws, but what she was referring to was a handful of blue states and Washington D.C. where no limit is the standard.

McDaniel said Democrats should be willing to come to a consensus on reasonable abortion restrictions in line with perspectives shared by most Americans, regardless of party affiliation. She also suggested Republicans who want to ban abortion across the board weren’t doing the party any favors.

She drew attention to Virginia state senate candidate Danny Diggs, who featured his daughter defending a 15-week ban in his campaign ads as a good way to get their messaging across.

Bash asked if the idea of opposing abortion itself was the problem rather than how it was communicated or restricted. McDaniels indicated that she believed that most of the country favored reasonable restrictions. When pressed on her opinions on Republicans who argue for a complete ban, she declined to side against them, suggesting that they were making policy proposals in line with their constituencies.

When criticism from Ramaswamy emerged she chose to deflect, saying that the RNC “builds the road” for candidates and they have to perform individually to win office.
